This page tracks the bed-height problem because the bed platform drives the rear garage volume, the electrical bay box height, the passenger-side plumbing / hydronic bay box height, bike tray design, and rear-door service access.
The current decision driver is confirmed: two Velotric fat-tire e-bikes always travel inside the rear garage under the bed, on slide-out trays, with front wheels removed. The platform height should not be finalized until the front-wheel-off bike envelope is measured from the actual bikes, fork mount, tray deck, and bed structure.
| Item | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Storage concept | accepted in principle | Two Velotric bikes ride inside the rear garage under the bed. |
| Wheel strategy | accepted in principle | Front wheels removed for storage-height reduction. |
| Velotric fork-mount interface | measured | User physical measurement on 2026-05-22: front fork dropout slot about 9.5 mm; inside dropout spacing 135 mm. Treat this as the active fork-mount requirement until contradicted by Velotric support or a repeat measurement. |
| Bed platform height | blocked | Requires physical front-wheel-off bike mockup. |
| Electrical bay box height | blocked by bed height | Rear driver-side bay can start as a plan view, but vertical packaging should wait for the bike envelope. |
| Passenger plumbing / hydronic bay height | blocked by bed height | Component grouping can continue, but final enclosure height and access-panel geometry should wait. |
| Bike tray hardware | partially delivered | RB Components 60" DIY Slide Tray Kit is purchased and shipped. Fork mounts are also purchased and delivered: 2x MBP Alloy Quick Release Fat Fork Mount Bike Block, 9x135mm. Remaining work is rear wheel capture, tie-downs, installed height measurement, and rear-door clearance. |
| Bike | Source-backed facts | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|
| Velotric Nomad 2X Step-Thru / Sage | Official Velotric product page lists Step-Thru handlebar height 1080 mm, wheelbase 1330 mm, total length 2065 mm, bike weight 80 lb, 700 mm handlebar, and 26x4.0 in tires. Source: Velotric Nomad 2X. |
This is the taller published handlebar envelope and should be treated as the controlling bike unless the physical mockup proves otherwise. |
| Velotric Nomad 2 Step-Thru / Regular / Olive | Official Velotric product page lists Regular Step-Thru rider range 5'2"-5'11", 705.6 Wh battery, 26x4.0 in tires, and product weight 75 lb. Search-indexed official geometry lists Step-Thru Regular handlebar height 1060 mm and wheelbase 1230 mm. Source: Velotric Nomad 2. |
Slightly shorter than the Nomad 2X by published handlebar height, but still requires physical storage measurement because tray/fork geometry can dominate. |
| Combined bike load | Published bike weights total about 155 lb before trays, slides, fork mounts, tie-downs, locks, helmets, chargers, and batteries removed for charging. |
Use as the minimum moving-load case for slide/tray selection, not as the final structural load. |
| Front fork mount interface | User physical measurement on 2026-05-22: dropout slot about 9.5 mm; inside dropout spacing 135 mm. |
Use the 9 x 135 mm / 135QR fat-bike fork-mount class, not BMX 10 x 100 mm mounts. |
The active fork-mount requirement is 9.5 mm x 135 mm, based on user measurement of the Velotric front fork on 2026-05-22. This changes the hardware search from BMX 10 x 100 mm to fat-bike 9 x 135 mm / 135QR.
Shortlist:

|---|---|---|
Kuat Dirtbag DRT9x135 |
Kuat lists variant DRT9x135: 9mm x 135mm - Skewer - Phat. Source: Kuat Dirtbag. |
Strong simple fork-block candidate for a custom RB tray. Confirm installed height and whether its QR skewer clamps the Velotric fork cleanly before buying two. |
| Sunlite Bike Block 135QR Fat Fork Mount | Retailer listing calls it 135mm quick release, forged alloy, for fat-bike storage/transport. Source: Jenson USA Sunlite 135QR. |
Cheap and likely correct width class. Less documented than Kuat; confirm skewer/nut engagement and base height. |
| Yakima Fat Bike QR Locking Skewer / ForkChop ecosystem | Retailer listing describes 9mm x 135mm axle support for Yakima HighSpeed / ForkChop. Source: Yakima Fat Bike QR Locking Skewer. |
Useful reference for the 9 x 135 mm standard, but a full Yakima tray system may be overbuilt or too tall for this under-bed garage. |
| FATDAPTER 135 mm skewer adapter | Manufacturer describes a 135 mm skewer adapter for adapting fatbike/e-bike forks to standard 100 mm fork-mount racks. Source: FATDAPTER. | More useful if adapting an existing 100 mm mount; probably not the cleanest path if buying/building the mount from scratch. |
Avoid BMX 10 x 100 mm fork mounts unless a future measurement contradicts the 135 mm fork spacing.

This is the working slide platform for the under-bed Velotric garage. Local install sheet is now indexed at /van/artifacts/manuals/storage/rb-components-60in-diy-slide-tray-kit-installation-instructions-2020.pdf. |
The locally indexed RB Components installation sheet for this tray family covers 60" x 24" Aluminum Slide Tray Kit #61750-KIT-A and 60" DIY Slide Tray Kit #61750-KIT-B.
Current source-backed takeaways from that manual:
60" L x 24" W x 3.5" HFor L-track mounting, the same sheet says the additional required parts are:
#2494-LTB L-track, front and back mounting4x #2506 L-track fitting with threaded studPublished handlebar height is useful as an upper bound, but it is the normal riding-height number with both wheels installed. The storage envelope changes when the front wheel is removed.
The front-wheel-off height depends on:
Do not convert published handlebar height directly into bed height without a mockup.
Use the physical mockup to fill this in:
finished bed underside height =
max(front-wheel-off bike storage height for both bikes)
+ tray deck height above finished floor
+ slide / fork-mount projection not already included
+ insertion clearance
+ bed-frame underside thickness or rail intrusion
For early planning only, the published Nomad 2X handlebar height is about 42.5 in (1080 mm). Removing the front wheel should reduce the storage height materially, but the actual reduction is not source-backed until the bike is mounted in the intended fork fixture. A fork mount that holds the front axle several inches above the tray deck can give back some of the height saved by removing the wheel.
Perform this before setting the bed platform datum:
| Measurement | Needed for | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Nomad 2X front-wheel-off maximum height | Bed underside and bay-box height | waiting on measurement |
| Nomad 2 front-wheel-off maximum height | Bed underside and bay-box height | waiting on measurement |

| Fork dropout slot width | Fork-mount axle/skewer class | measured: about 9.5 mm, user physical observation 2026-05-22 |
| Fork-mount axle height above tray deck | Whether a low-profile mount is required | waiting on selected mount |
| Tray deck height above finished floor | Final bed-height stackup | waiting on measurement |
| Highest point identity | Whether height is handlebar, display, brake lever, mirror, rack, saddle, or other part | waiting on measurement |
| Required storage length, front wheel removed | Tray length and forward stop | waiting on measurement |
| Required slide extension | Loading ergonomics and rear-door clearance | waiting on measurement |
